BBS in Recreation & Sport Management
CAO Code: WD 212
The Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Recreation and Sport Management is designed so as to develop competencies and transferable skills across a range of disciplines. The degree aims to provide both a general insight and specialist focus, preparing students academically and professionally to work in the wider sport, recreation, leisure and business industries.
To date, the course has attracted students with a variety of sporting and leisure interests and a range of sporting abilities. This combination of sporting interest and enthusiasm allied to a desire for leisure-related work provides a catalyst for Ireland’s expanding sport and leisure industry. The business management skills acquired while completing this course help to develop the expertise necessary for employment in the operation and management of sports, recreation and leisure-related programmes and facilities. The course continues to adapt to the changing needs of the sport and leisure industry, providing flexibility and thereby catering for student interests and career ambitions.
Facilities for the programme include a gymnasium, sports hall, testing laboratories, aerobic studio, conditioning area (all main campus) and playing fields and a floodlit all-weather area based at the Sports Campus (Carriganore). The close proximity of the Waterford City Council regional sports centre (RSC), Waterford Crystal Sports Centre and an extensive range of outdoor amenities within a short distance of the college compliment the study programme.

Modules
Unique Features
Students complete 14 weeks of work placement in year two of the course. This provides vital real-world experience for students in their chosen area of interest whilst also expanding their skill and knowledge base. Placements can include leisure centres, national governing bodies (e.g. FAI, GAA, IRFU), local sports partnerships and national organisations (e.g. Special Olympics, Paralympics Ireland). Opportunities for placements abroad are also available.
Students complete four hours of practical sports skills per semester in years one and two. This enables students to develop the basic skills of leading youth groups in a variety of sporting activity contexts. Other modules with practical components include event management, outdoor recreation and adapted physical activity. The practical fitness instruction stream also allows students to gain professional qualifications in gym and group fitness instruction.
After placement in year two, students choose electives for year three. This allows students to progress onto modules that suit their career objectives (e.g. coaching, event management, adapted physical activity).
