1. Communicating with followers
On a daily basis we see different stories all over the world regarding certain players. These stories can be negative and sometimes they can be untrue. Social media networks such as Twitter have given the players back a voice and tell their side of the story. The player’s reputation benefits immensely from this! It is a solution that gives the fans answers quicker than waiting to see news updates in papers/magazines.
Some professional teams have put policies in place where a player cannot post anywhere from half an hour to two hours before and after a game. Other than this the players are able to post any content at any time. The players can be given advise on what not to post but at the end of the day it is completely the individuals choice. Celebrating a win online can be of interest but also commenting as positively as possible on a loss can encourage fans of the player/team not to give up on the club.
2. Sporting Apps
3. Commonality of Interest
4. Increased News Cycle Speed
5. Motivation
Although there are many negative ways that social media can impact sport regarding the player, match and viewers, there are also ways that it can have a positive effect. People can connect and share common interests regarding sport and personal issues. Social media networks are a place that bring professional players and average people together. It is a great way to get information that is reliable by just a click of a button on your phone at any time. Social media has improved immensely over the past few years and I predict it will only get better over time!
